ChatGPT, Sora, and OpenAI’s developer API experienced significant downtime on Thursday, lasting over four hours.

OpenAI reported that the outage began at 11 a.m. PT, though services began to gradually restore by 3:16 p.m. PT. Users who frequently rely on ChatGPT may recall a similar outage earlier this month.

TechCrunch encountered error messages when attempting to access ChatGPT and Sora on Thursday afternoon.

OpenAI's status page attributed the outage to issues with an upstream provider but did not provide further details. By 2:05 p.m. PT, OpenAI confirmed partial recovery for ChatGPT, though some users might still face difficulties loading their chat history. Sora resumed operations by 3:16 p.m. PT, with OpenAI continuing to work on a full resolution for both ChatGPT and the API.

This marks the second major service disruption for OpenAI this month. Two weeks ago, a lengthy six-hour outage was attributed to a problematic telemetry service. Typically, such outages last only one to two hours.

Popular services reliant on OpenAI’s API, such as Perplexity and Apple’s Siri Intelligence integration, did not seem to be affected, according to their respective status pages and TechCrunch’s checks.
